What’s going on?
Walker Corporation has advised it will remove seven (7) trees in Church Street Mall on Saturday 26 August 2017.
City of Parramatta Council and Walker Corporation are working to replace all trees by the end of September 2017. Mature replacement trees will remain in temporary planter boxes during construction, and will be relocated in the Parramatta Square Public Domain, including in front of 8 Parramatta Square in Church Street Mall, upon completion.
Shading in Church Street Mall is a key consideration for Council and that’s why we’ve worked with Walker Corporation to identify suitable mature replacement trees that will provide shade.
Why are the works necessary?
The removal of the trees is in line with planning consent for DA/319/2016 approved in September 2016 and is necessary so the hoarding can be moved to enable construction work on the basement of 8 Parramatta Square. The hoarding will be moved to its new boundary once the trees are removed and will remain in place until construction finishes in 2020.
An arborist report into the health and safety of the trees - five (5) Platanus acerofolia (Plane trees) and two (2) Ulmus parvifolia (Chinese Elms) – indicated they were likely to be damaged during construction, making their removal necessary.
What does this mean for you?
Walker Corporation has advised the tree removal works will take place between 7am and 1pm on Saturday 26 August 2017.
Temporary fencing will be installed around the trees to ensure pedestrian safety. Pedestrian access through Church Street Mall will be retained during the works.
Traffic controllers will be in place during the removal of trees closest to Darcy Street to ensure vehicles can access Queensland Arcade during this time.
