20 students from our school were invited to attend a two day program where hundreds of other young people were brought together at Western Sydney University Bankstown for What’s Up West? Western Sydney Youth Conference 2017.
What’s up West? is an amazing event designed for young people in Western Sydney to talk about issues that matter to us. The event included many activities that informed us about important topics such as mental health, physical health, sexual health, advocacy, leadership and many more. Most sessions were divided into different rooms, each room had a certain topic that young youth discussed about. I went to sessions such as slam poetry which was one of highlights of the event for me. We had the chance to listen to other students’ slam poetry about topics that mattered to them and it was beautiful.
Many inspirational, empowered men and women talked about their experiences such as
L- fresh the lion. A rising hip hop artist from Western Sydney, he talked about his experience of creating a positive change around the world and being one of the 27 people invited to be apart of YouTube's Creator for Change program.
It was one of the events that I will never forget as a student of Arthur Phillip High school and part of this community. I felt empowered, motivated, inspired to make a change in our society.
